Electrical Safety Guide for Oxford Homeowners

Electrical safety isn't something most Oxford homeowners think about until something goes wrong. Understanding the basics can prevent fires, electric shocks, and costly damage.

Common electrical hazards at home

Overloaded sockets

The most common electrical hazard in Oxford homes is overloaded sockets. Plugging too many appliances into one socket via extension leads and adapters can cause overheating and fire. Each socket is rated for 13 amps (approximately 3,000 watts). High-power appliances like kettles, heaters, and hair dryers should never share a socket. If you regularly need more sockets, have additional ones installed properly by an electrician.

Old wiring

If your Oxford home was built before the 1980s and hasn't been rewired, the wiring may be deteriorating. Rubber-insulated cables (black with coloured cores) from pre-1960s installations are now brittle and can crack, exposing live wires. Even PVC-insulated wiring from the 1970s-80s may have degraded connections. An EICR will identify any dangerous wiring and recommend remedial action.

Electrical safety essentials

RCD protection

RCDs (Residual Current Devices) are the single most important electrical safety device in your home. They detect tiny current leaks to earth and trip the power in milliseconds, preventing electric shock. If your consumer unit doesn't have RCD protection, upgrading it is the most impactful safety improvement you can make. A consumer unit upgrade in Oxford costs £350-£750 and could save your life.

Smoke and heat alarms

From 1 October 2022, all rental properties in England must have smoke alarms on every floor and a heat alarm in the kitchen. For owner-occupied homes, this is strongly recommended. Mains-wired, interconnected alarms are the gold standard: if one detects smoke, they all sound. Installation costs £50-£250 per alarm. Battery-only alarms are a minimum standard but are less reliable than mains-wired units.

DIY electrical work: what's allowed

What you can do yourself

In England, you can legally carry out some minor electrical work yourself, including: replacing sockets, switches, and light fittings on a like-for-like basis (not in a bathroom or kitchen), replacing a fuse in a plug, and fitting a new lamp holder. However, just because it's legal doesn't mean it's safe. If you're not confident, hire an electrician. Incorrectly wired sockets are a fire risk and can be lethal.

What requires a qualified electrician

Work that must be done by a registered electrician includes: new circuits, consumer unit replacement, any work in a bathroom or kitchen, work in a garden or outbuilding, and additions to existing circuits. These fall under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be notified to Building Control. Using a registered electrician (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA) means they handle the notification for you.

Staying safe in Oxford

Regular maintenance

Have an EICR every 10 years (every 5 for rental properties). Test your RCDs monthly by pressing the test button on the consumer unit. Replace damaged cables, sockets, and switches immediately. Never ignore burning smells, warm sockets, or frequently tripping circuits. These are all warning signs that need professional investigation before they become dangerous.

When to call an electrician

Call an electrician immediately if: you see sparks from a socket or switch, there's a burning smell from electrical fittings, sockets or switches feel warm, lights flicker persistently, the consumer unit trips repeatedly, or you experience a tingling sensation when touching appliances. Our Oxford electricians provide same-day emergency response for dangerous situations. Call 01865 922 101.
